Kohunlich

General Information:


Its name means “Cohune Ridge” which was the name of an ancient lumber camp. This city is located in the low south lands where we can find links to other mayan religions specially in the Bec River in Campeche and Petén in Guatemala. This archeological site is currently surrounded by jungle, its beautiful stones are covered by soft and green lawn, we can easily admire a great variety of preserved buildings inside the area. It has been said that this was a noicy city whose inhabitants made long trips to the center of the Peninsula to trade with other mayan domains. The amazing masks of Kohunlich combine human features with mythical elements. Enigmatic faces representing the God of the Sun. They are found in excellent condition and they are the only preserved ones of its type in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Located at 69 Kms from Chetumal, in the Km 60 of the Highway 186, Chetumal-Escárcega.

History:


Founded in the year 200 B.C. and continued (approx. 900-1000 A.C.) until the Early Postclassic Period (1000-1200 A.C.)

This site has parking, washrooms and certified guides that offer their services during visit hours. Visit hours are from 8 to 17 hrs. Monday to Sunday.
