Known as the “City of the Three Cultures” due to the fact that combines features of its prehispanic past, the colonial period and the current age. In its territory we distinguish 7 mayan pyramids, and about 80 structures have been found in this prehispanic city among which is the pyramid of Kinich Kak Moo being the third biggest prehispanic structure in Mexico. Izamal is thought to be older than Chichen and Uxmal and it was a huge mayan ceremonial center, important center of cult to the god Itzamná. It is known, thanks to the Chilam Balam of Chumayel, that Izamal was a stong ally of the population that inhabited its Mayan Pyramids, The Franciscan Convent and the Historic Center.
