Dzibilchaltun

General Information:


In maya, it means “The Place where there is Writting in the Stones” making reference to the numerous stelles found in this place. Here is found the Desdén Code, one of the three most important mayan codes. Dzibilchaltún is one of the main ancient settlements of the mayan civilization in Yucatán, it had an extense population placing it as one of the biggest ancient cities of mesoamerica. Its buildings are perfectly oriented and closely related to Venus, the moon and the sun. Besides the stelles that are found in this place, it’s distinguished by the true masonry in its architecture as well as the vaults that were built with the salted stones system. There exist more than 8000 structures that cover approx. 19 square Kms, the centra part is formed by several monumental constructions that cover 25 hectares. In the rest of the area we can observe architectonic sets with pyramids and vaulted buildings. The urban core had as symbolic center the Xlacah Cenote, one of the deepest and biggest found in the Yucatan Peninsula. Upto now, it is unkown the total depth of this natural cavity. The Group of the Seven Dolls is related to astronomical practices due to its orientation, the openings of the windows, doors and other holes concide with the light and shadow phenomenons asociated to the solstices and equinnox.

Located at 14 Kms from Mérida, through the Highway 261, Mérida-Progreso.

History:


Its constructions belong to the Late Classic between the years 600 and 900 A.C.

It has parking, washrooms, shops, museum, security. Visiting hours are from 8hrs to 17hrs, Monday to Sunday.
