Sayil - Ruta Puuc

General Information:


Its name means “Place of the Ants” which refers to the typical ants of the region. It has been suggested that Sayil had commercial and social relations with Kabá-Uxmal. Located at five kilometers south of Kabah and is formed by isolated buildings, connected by a main sacbé which links the Great Palace (two levels), south we can find The Ball Game Court and in the middle of these two there is an important temple, El Mirador which was built over a piramid between four and five meters high. This building was most likely asociated to the ancient elite. The Great Palace’s highlight is its monumental structure, which has 3 phased levels with 94 rooms divided by columns, this is the most important building due to its dimensions as well as its decoration and location, it is one of the architectonic sets most impressive of the area. In this place we can observe a 90 meters deep well with virgin waters that come from the interior of this mayan lands.

Located at 112 Km of Mérida, through the Highway 261, Santa Elena-Oxkutzcab.

History:


Some dates indicate occupancy since the year 600 A.C. but its known that its biggest development period was between 700 and 1000 A.C.
